Friends of IAR
intro
‘Friends of IAR’ is the name given to our community of most loyal supporters, those who donate monthly. We chose this name, as our monthly donors are generous, caring and reliable people who are passionate about, and fully committed to, our mission – everything you would want from a friend.
Our friends fund everything from orangutan conservation to bear rescues and allow us to work uninterrupted towards our goal of a world where humans and animals can thrive in harmony.
Regular income allows us to plan ahead.
Regular income allows us to commit to long term projects.
Regular income allows us to spend less on fundraising.
Small amounts over time add up to make a big impact.
Our friends entrust us with their donations, safe in the knowledge that it will be sent where it is needed most. If you choose to hear from us, we will keep you updated on the difference your support is making at regular points throughout the year. We are funded entirely by donations, making our friends a crucial member of our team.
Made Possible by Friends
Sloth Bear Hammock
Thanks to our wonderful friend Timothy W and his monthly donation of £5 we have been able to purchase another hammock for our sloth bears in India.
Most of the bears in the sanctuaries in India have been freed from a life of torture and pain, forced to ‘dance’ in a warped form of entertainment. These bears now live in peace and are given all the comforts we can provide. The bears have plenty of trees to climb and pools to cool down in during the intense summer heat but they love nothing more than dozing in a hammock while the Indian sun beats down.

1 Day Conservation Camp
Thanks to Josephin B., our amazing friend from Germany, who donates €5 monthly and has raised enough to fully cover the costs of running a conservation camp in Borneo for a whole day!
Taking place in the forest of Pematang Gadung, Borneo, our partners YIARI invite local teenagers to develop and foster their interest in conservation. Rather than exploiting the environment through poaching, logging and other harmful practices, they are instead encouraged to become active stewards in the protection of the forests. Importantly, this of course extends to the wildlife within, including orangutans.
Thank you so much Josephin! This is just one example of many projects YOUR monthly donation could help support. Please consider becoming a Friend of IAR today.
A Month of Orangutan Forest School
Thank you to Friend of IAR Annabelle C whose donation of £10 a month could now fund an orangutan through a whole month of forest school! Every orangutan rescued by the BKSDA and supported by our partners, YIARI, has their own incredible story of survival. From being orphaned to surviving the illegal pet trade, rescued orangutans have faced unimaginable challenges.
Monthly donors like Annabelle have been with them from the beginning, guiding them through each step of their journey. Forest school is a crucial stage in their rehabilitation. This is where they learn essential survival skills like climbing, foraging, and building nests, preparing them to one day thrive in the wild!
By the end of this year, we’re aiming to have 100 Friends of IAR supporting this incredible project every single month. Please become a Friend of IAR today!
500 Trees Planted
Thanks to Rebbeca W, our friend of the US, who donated $20 a month and has now donated enough to plant 500 trees! This initiative is more than just planting trees: it’s about creating a brighter future for orangutans and local communities alike.
With every tree planted, YIARI is not only protecting vital orangutan habitats but also empowering local communities. Their reforestation efforts provide employment opportunities and engage the community in positive, rainforest-friendly activities. Working together with local communities, organisations, and government bodies, YIARI is implementing sustainable solutions that ensure these saplings can thrive!

Releasing a Howler Monkey Troop
Thanks to the amazing support from our friend Steven A from the United Kingdom, whose donation of £50 a month could now release an troop of howler monkeys! These brave little survivors came into our care after suffering unimaginable trauma through uninsulated power cables, attacks by dogs, and being hit by vehicles.
Over several years, they’ve received thorough medical checks to ensure each one is healthy and strong. After completing their rehabilitation, they entered the pre-release enclosure and then finally the door to that enclosure is opened and they are free once more! All the monkeys have undergone years of rehabilitation before finally reaching this stage, and Steven’s monthly support has been instrumental in helping them take this last step towards freedom.
