Strategic Implementation Partners
International Animal Rescue (IAR) has built close long-standing collaborative relationships with the following strategic partners, who operate in-country and run the projects. IAR provides funding, collaborative support and technical advice to facilitate the smooth operation of the projects.
IAR Costa Rica (IAR CR)
IAR CR (previously known as Refuge for Wildlife) has been a strategic partner of International Animal Rescue since 2016. It runs the Sir Michael Uren Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre located in Nosara, on the Pacific West Coast of Costa Rica. The rescue centre responds to hundreds of wildlife incidents every year and deals with a wide variety of species. One of the most significant threats is the electrocution of howler monkeys on unsafe power lines. The specialist veterinary team treats electrocution victims and then cares for them through a robust process of rehabilitation. The monkeys are socialised into troops and, when ready, released as a group back into the wild. IAR CR also implements strategies to mitigate and prevent electrocutions and other threats to wildlife.
Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) - Armenia
FPWC has been a strategic partner of International Animal Rescue since 2017 when the two organisations collaborated to launch The Great Bear Rescue. The key areas of activity of the FPWC are protection and conservation of Armenia’s unique natural and cultural heritage. The Great Bear Rescue is a project designed to liberate captive bears from tiny, cramped cages where they are kept in private collections and, where possible, release them into the wild or, otherwise, provide them with safe sanctuary, while lobbying for policy change to stop bears (and other wildlife) from being kept in appalling conditions.
Wildlife SOS - India
Wildlife SOS has been a strategic partner of International Animal Rescue since 2000. Together, Wildlife SOS and IAR created the Dancing Bear Project in India. The aim was to end the 400 year old practice of dancing bears for entertainment, provide sanctuary for the rescued bears and provide support for the communities that were reliant on the bears. Over 600 bears were saved and the last dancing bear in India was rescued in December 2009. Wildlife SOS runs the bear sanctuaries in Agra, Bangalore and Bhopal where the rescued bears live out their days peacefully and safely. Amongst its other projects, Wildlife SOS also operates a wonderful elephant hospital in Uttar Pradesh.
YIARI - Indonesia
International Animal Rescue has been a strategic partner to YIARI since it was formed in 2007. Originally, YIARI started working with macaques and built a rescue centre in Java. This primate work expanded into the wildlife pet trade and the centre soon became expert in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of slow lorises. In 2009, YIARI started a new project in West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) to address issues facing orangutans, this led to the construction of the YIARI Orangutan Rescue and Conservation Centre and, later, the Sir Michael Uren Education Centre. YIARI has developed holistic strategies that aim to preserve habitats and protect the wildlife that lives in them, ensuring the animals’ welfare. YIARI involves communities, governmental and non-governmental organisations and the private sector to collaborate and take action in protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable natural resource management through awareness campaigns, capacity building and community development.
