About Rahman
Rahman was discovered by oil palm plantation workers in July 2018. These workers reported finding a crying orangutan alone in the oil palm plantation. Initially, they decided to wait, hoping the mother would return. However, after a day and night passed with no sign of the mother, they alerted YIARI and BKSDA about the baby orangutan. He was just one years old at the time of rescue.
Since then he has spent five years with us and has progressed so much since his rescue. He continues to learn survival skills and currently lives on Data Island with four other orangutans.

Rahman's Story
Rahman was discovered by oil palm plantation workers in Tanjung Pasar Village, Muara Pawan District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, in July 2018. These workers reported finding a crying orangutan alone in the oil palm plantation, they said they had spotted a baby orangutan on the plantation several times over the previous two months. Initially, they decided to wait, hoping the mother would return. However, after a day and night passed with no sign of the mother, they alerted YIARI and BKSDA about the baby orangutan.
At approximately one year old, Rahman was taken to the IAR Indonesia Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Sungai Awan Kiri Village, located about 45 minutes away from the palm oil plantation where he was found.
As with all orangutan intakes at the rescue centre, Rahman spent an eight week period in quarantine. This is to ensure he is given a thorough medical check and is tested for an contagious diseases which could spread to the rest of our orangutans.
Fortunately for Rahman he was found to be carrying no infectious diseases and was just mildly dehydrated, a pretty good bill of health for a rescued orangutan.
Rahman has been in rehabilitation for nearly five years and currently resides on Data Island with four other orangutans. His typical day on Data Island begins with consuming supplimentary feed from the keepers, showing no pickiness and eating all the food provided. His favorites include corn and sweet potatoes. During the day, he roams around the island in search of food and frequently interacts and plays with the other orangutans there. Rahman is sociable with all the orangutans, and occasionally he takes daytime naps in the trees.
Rahman’s foraging skills have greatly improved since being on Data Island. He has learned to find termites and, when the forest fruit supply diminishes, he can also pick and eat bark. Additionally, Rahman has developed the ability to build his own nests, although he now tends to repair and use old nests.
